Daubing Day
In years gone by, members of the community would meet together to construct the homes and buildings they needed. One historical account describes how men, women and children got together to raise a cob house, followed at the end of the day with a great party, with food, wine and music..this was called a "daubing".
On a sunny sunday in July 2006 we had our own equivalent; local friends and families gathered together to make cob bricks. We had a great production line going, from the wetting and the sorting of the mix, to the tamping and shaping of the bricks, carefully carried to the drying racks ready for airing. All ages got involved, and we fired up the barbecue and had a great lunch; there was singing, there was laughing and many dirty hands and faces by the end of the day. Oh, and another 250 cob bricks were made too.
